Embodied Plant ID

For the Embodied Plant ID Tour, I was joined by Adelaide Botanic Gardens horticulturalist Flavio Perez, composer Antony Abbracciavento, and ACE Artistic Director Danni Zuvela for a multisensory plant identification tour at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

This experience centred on embodied ways of experiencing and knowing the natural world, moving beyond visual observation alone to welcome everyone, with a particularly warm welcome for members of the blind and low vision community and neurodivergent people.

Together, we safely explored the identification of plants through tactile and olfactory discovery. We gently examined the textures of stems, feel the intricate veins of leaves, breathed in the fragrances of spring blooms, and appreciated the unique shapes of fallen seeds and their pods. We concluded with conversations and plant-based music from ABG plant expert Flavio Perez.

I acknowledge that I work on the Country of the Kaurna, Ngarrindjeri and Peramangk people. I pay my respects to Elders past and present. I recognise and respect their culture heritage, traditions and relationships to Country and acknowledge they are of continued importance to Kaurna, Ngarrindjeri and Peramangk people living today. Their lands were never ceded and this was and always will be Aboriginal Land.
