This ceramic series subverts the notion of porcelain skin as an aspect of ideal beauty. I investigate skin as a site of abjection, as it forms a boarder of exchange between internal self and external world. The mirrors were slip cast in porcelain and altered to reflect images of that which is considered grotesque, cast out from the self. Through my ceramic practice, I seek to break down boundaries between binary oppositions which cast out the unwanted other. I do this through explorations into the abject with the aim of presenting repetitive images of that which is socially constructed as repulsive within the embodied subject in order to normalise it. I also aim to subvert socially constructed notions of identity and reframe humanity as a whole.
